For my first few post, I will be taking a look at the issues of the Nintendo Fun Club News that I have. This was the precursor to Nintendo Power, a free newsletter that you could sign up for to get info, tips and tricks (and a lot of ads) about NES titles. it was much shorter than what the magazine would become later and used minimal colors in this early issue but you can see some early concepts of what Nintendo Power would become. I don’t have issues 1 and 2, so I’m starting with issue 3 which features The Legend of Zelda.
The artwork from the first Legend of Zelda is my favorite art in the entire series and the cover image is one of the best. It really conveys the sense of challenge and exploration that the game provides. Passwords were highlighted in the ‘Prez Sez’ letter which was a new concept for console games at the time. Outside of the Zelda feature in the magazine, we get highlights on Metroid, Kid Icarus and the first mention of Punch Out which would release later that year. We also get a first mention of Zelda II though it wouldn’t be seen for a few more years in America.
Though an early concept of what Nintendo Power would later become, this issue of the Nintendo Fun Club News highlights numerous games that are NES classics today and was an essential issue to have for the Zelda players looking for tips on how to conquer the game.
Enjoy the issue and Play with Power!
